On the Way home
Between here and there --
Three convenience stores
Seven traffic lights
Two small Shinto shrines
Moonlit fields of rice.

Early summer: Japan
Crickets and stag beetles
rice paddies, irises,
fireworks, chu-hi, and beans.
It means nothing -- unless
you're home here. If you were,
you'd know. Just what it is.

Philip Whalen writes --
"The dill plant lives, the airplane
My alarm clock, this ink
I won't go away
I shall be myself -- "
... and he always was. Whalen passed away this past
year, and though I've never met him, I've walked where
he walked, sat where he sat, tried to be as still to
listen as he did. Today, reading, I head his voice speak
out from the page. It said ...
"Everybody takes me too seriously.
Nobody believes anything I say....."
and then ...
"hello?
